The Kiss”, cast mass, after A. Rodin, ZCF stamped on base, 20th century.

Measurements:  28cm high x 14cm wide including base. Condition: Perfect. No chips or repairs.

The Kiss originally represented Paolo and Francesca, two characters borrowed from Dante’s Divine Comedy.

Slain by Francesca’s husband who surprised them as they exchanged their first kiss, the two lovers were condemned to wander eternally through Hell.

Originally Rodin entitled the work Francesca da Rimini.

It was the art critics of the era who, after seeing the piece for the first time in 1887, suggested the name The Kiss .

A more universal title anyone can identify with. The artwork became a symbol of love, rather than a story of fictional adultery.
