This ashtray is in good used condition.
There is some wear commensurate with age but, overall, the ashtray has no chips or cracks.
There is a profile portrait of Julius Caesar in the middle with a laurel leaf border.
Measurements: 17.5cm in diameter.
Black Basalt ware is a dry-bodied stoneware fired in an oxidizing atmosphere to produce a black fabric.
It was originally used by Josiah Wedgwood for his famous Etruscan vases.
It continued later in use for such everyday items such as tea wares. Engine-turned designs date to after 1760.
