Organisational Structure and Management Procedures

Paramount in the running of a Charity Welfare Organisation is transparency, ethics and, above all, the ability of the organisation to demonstrate to its donors responsible and sound governance.

To this end we have borrowed Raymond Ackerman’s ‘table’ philosophy.
The four legs of the table relate to the four parts or legs supporting a healthy business and for us it is the patient who is positioned on top of the table and the patient who is sovereign.  Each leg is equally important in maintaining the business. For our Hospice to succeed, it must be run as a business.

The four legs of our table are:

  • Patient Care  - our core business
  • Income Generation - raising funds to ensure survival
  • Administration - the glue that holds the business together
  • Volunteers & Staff - essential hands and expertise

Overstrand Hospice is governed by its Board of Directors, which meets on a monthly basis and has responsibility for policy setting, for strategy and for the overall financial health of the organisation. Board members are not remunerated and are nominated and selected for their business or professional expertise and, very importantly, their commitment. Most are retired professionals who have both the time to offer and the passion to make Overstrand Hospice a success. Board Members are allocated  relevant portfolios to manage and monitor.

We have five full time employees - a General Manager, two Professional Nursing Sisters, an Administrative Secretary and the Shop Manager.

The balance of the work is undertaken by volunteers and hourly paid employees and consultants.
