Governance

Organisational Structure and Management Procedures

Transparency, ethics and the ability to demonstrate to its donors responsible and sound governance are paramount in the running of a charity organization.

To this end we have followed Raymond Ackerman’s ‘table’ philosophy of four legs of the table relating to the four areas supporting a healthy business.
For Overstrand Hospice it is our patients who are positioned on top of the table and who are sovereign.
Each leg is equally important in maintaining the business. For our Hospice to succeed, it must be run as a business.

The four legs of our table are:

  • Patient Care  - our core business
  • Income Generation - raising funds to ensure survival
  • Administration - the glue that holds the business together
  • Volunteers & Staff - essential hands and expertise

Overstrand Hospice is governed by a Board of Directors, which meets on a monthly basis.
This board is responsible for policy setting, for strategy and for the overall financial health of the organisation.
Board members are not remunerated and are nominated and selected for their business or professional expertise and their commitment.
Many are retired professionals who have both the time and skills to offer and the passion to make Overstrand Hospice a success.
Board Members are allocated relevant portfolios to monitor.

We have several permanent employees - a General Manager, two Professional Nurses, a Social Worker, an Office Administrator, the 600 Club Administrator, a Trusts & Legacy Developer, a Fundraiser, a Patient Care Administrator, a Shop Manager and two Shop Assistants and a Volunteer Coordinator.
The balance of the work is undertaken by volunteers and hourly paid relief staff.
